We spend a lot of time refining our front yards—for good reason. Your front lawn is the first thing someone is going to see when they visit your home, and an aesthetically pleasing front yard makes a great first impression.
During the summer months, people spend more time outside. Because most of this time is spent in the backyard, you should make sure your backyard is comfortable and meets your needs.
Consider the following to help revamp your backyard:
- Install a patio or a deck
- Update your garden furniture
- Grow a healthy, green lawn
Install a Patio or a Deck
Creating a patio can be as simple as pouring a concrete pad and adding a few lawn chairs and an umbrella. A deck takes more effort to build and can be an elevated structure or level with the ground.
Add a roof over your patio to create some shade during the day. Whether it’s created by a pavilion or a pergola, a shaded sitting area can help take your backyard to the next level.
A patio or a deck is the perfect spot for summer barbecues. If you’re feeling ambitious, you could also build a permanent grill station and outdoor kitchen area with built-in seating. With a patio like that, everyone will be begging to be invited to your Labor Day barbecue this year!
Update your Garden Furniture

Sometimes a few lawn chairs just don’t quite cut it. If you’re getting bored with your backyard, think about updating the furniture you have in your yard now. A swinging chair or a portable propane-powered fire pit may also be nice additions. Follow these steps to determine which garden furniture is best for you:
- Ask yourself what your priorities are. For example, do you need plenty of seating for friends and family, or would you prefer a cozy set-up for just two?
- Measure your space and determine what size of furniture you can comfortably fit in your yard.
- Choose your preferred type of seating and determine your budget.
- Choose your lighting. Outdoor lanterns or twinkle lights can add a feeling of warmth to your yard when the sun goes down.
- Choose your accessories. The type of accessories you choose will depend on what activities you plan to do in your backyard. A fire pit or a shade awning might be an essential part of your yard—or perhaps you need a perfect spot for your grill or a place to sit and eat.
Grow a Healthy, Green Lawn
Aside from somewhere to sit, you might want a place for kids or pets to run around and play. The best place for this is a soft, green lawn. There are several options for adding a lawn, but we highly recommend real grass over artificial grass. Artificial lawns become hot and uncomfortable during the summer. Real lawns (when properly cared for) are soft and cool—the perfect place for lunch on a picnic blanket this summer.
